As cellular health continues to evolve, and our understanding of it deepens – brands and formulators need clinically supported solutions that can address age-related health challenges not only through a future-facing longevity lens, but in the context of how consumers want to feel and perform today.
TetraSOD® provides one key route to bridge the worlds of sports nutrition and cellular health, supporting both physical performance and post-exercise recovery by enhancing the body’s cellular response and adaptation to the oxidative and inflammatory stress generated during strenuous exercise.
TetraSOD®, performance and recovery
TetraSOD® is particularly relevant in the context of physical performance and recovery – two areas that influence not only how we perform and recover today, but how we maintain physical resilience and function as we age.
TetraSOD® is a naturally occurring, activated marine microalgae (Tetraselmis chuii) that supports the body’s key antioxidant and cellular defence pathways – mechanisms that become particularly relevant during strenuous exercise when oxidative and inflammatory stress increases. TetraSOD® has been shown to support the body’s response to exercise-induced oxidative stress, creating a direct link between cellular health, physical performance and post-exercise recovery.
Unlike protein and carbohydrates, which primarily provide substrates for muscle protein synthesis and glycogen replenishment, TetraSOD® targets a different layer of the recovery process – supporting the body’s cellular response and adaptation to the oxidative and inflammatory stress generated during strenuous exercise.
And its role isn’t limited to the immediate exercise occasion as it extends beyond the singular action by supporting cellular resilience, antioxidant defences and healthy cellular signalling. TetraSOD® creates a broader connection between how the body responds and adapts to physiological stress today and how cellular health and physical function can be supported over time.
In human studies, TetraSOD® has been shown to be a potential solution for performance preservation and recovery following strenuous exercise. In a two-week study of endurance-trained participants supplementing with 25mg TetraSOD® daily versus a placebo, the TetraSOD® group demonstrated better preservation of physical performance and subsequent recovery following a demanding cross-training protocol.
The differences were particularly apparent in the recovery period. Squat-jump power declined 15% less, while creatine kinase [CK] – a marker commonly used to assess exercise-induced muscle damage was 14% lower after 24-hours versus control. By 48 hours, overall strength losses were also smaller, pointing towards a reduced deterioration in performance following accumulated exercise stress.
The benefits extend beyond recovery as TetraSOD® supplementation has shown improvements in biomarkers associated with oxidative stress, alongside measures of physical performance and exercise recovery. In a separate two-week human study, 25mg TetraSOD® daily significantly improved peak VO₂ relative to baseline, while no significant change was observed with placebo, potentially supporting the body’s ability to perform during high-intensity aerobic exercise.
TetraSOD® in the context of performance is less about simply pushing performance higher and more about helping preserve it when the body is placed under repeated physiological stress.
The performance-preservation narrative becomes even more apparent at a cellular level. TetraSOD® supports mitochondrial quality, efficiency and cellular resilience – factors that contribute to cellular energy capacity and recovery, particularly following strenuous exercise when muscle function needs to be restored.
One mechanism is the activation of NRF2 signalling in skeletal muscle, which stimulates the body’s endogenous antioxidant defence system. The better the system, the better the body can deal with the increased oxidative load generated during intense exercise, reducing its impact on muscle function.
And human research provides another interesting layer to this recovery narrative. Following five days of intensive resistance training, participants supplementing with TetraSOD® saw their peak rate of force development return close to baseline, while the placebo group experienced a significant reduction – pointing towards TetraSOD® as a solution for maintaining physical readiness between demanding training sessions.
A multi-layered evidence base
TetraSOD® doesn’t offer a single route to supporting performance or recovery, but rather a series of interconnected outcomes that help the body respond more effectively to exercise-induced oxidative stress, preserve physical performance and support the rate of recovery.
This multi-layered evidence base provides both depth and versatility, giving brands the opportunity to target multiple sport-specific performance and recovery outcomes through a single ingredient – creating a more holistic approach to maximising physical output.
Why this matters for
In repeated-performance environments, success isn’t determined solely by a single maximal output, but by the ability to recover and consistently reproduce that output. And this is where TetraSOD® creates an interesting opportunity, spanning two distinct performance territories: aerobic and neuromuscular output.
For R&D teams, this provides a foundation for developing formulations that target both physical performance and recovery following exercise-induced oxidative stress. In this context, TetraSOD® is less about simply pushing performance higher and more about helping preserve physical output when the body is exposed to repeated physiological stress.
